Common problems

Washer Problems We Fix in Cypress

Most Cypress washer calls fall into one of these six problems. Here is what is usually behind each one and what we do about it.

Front-loader shakes the whole upstairs on spin

Usually: Upstairs laundry rooms are standard in two-story Cypress homes, and a wood-framed floor amplifies every vibration. Worn shock absorbers, a machine that was never leveled, or a load of towels bunched on one side. On older front-loaders, a cracked drum spider.

What we do: We check the shocks, the leveling and the drum. New shocks and proper leveling fix most of them. If the spider or bearing is gone on an old machine, we tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it.

Stopped mid-cycle, full of water, door locked

Usually: The washer could not drain, so it will not unlock. A clogged drain pump filter (coins, hair ties, a sock), a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. The code is usually OE or nd.

What we do: We drain it, clear the filter and hose, test the pump and replace it if it failed. We also show you where the filter is so you can check it yourself next time.

Error code on the display

Usually: UE or Ub for unbalance, LE or F7 for a motor problem, dE or dL for a door lock, and a long list of others. Each code points to a part, and sometimes it is a sensor giving a false reading.

What we do: We read the code, test the part it points to (lock, sensor, motor, pump or board) and replace only what actually failed.

Leaking at the front of a front-loader

Usually: A torn or dirty door boot, a dispenser drawer clogged with detergent, or a cracked hose behind the drum. Overdosing detergent in the HE machines is the most common reason the boot and dispenser leak.

What we do: We clean or replace the boot, clear the dispenser and fix the hose. We also explain how much detergent these machines actually need, which is a lot less than the cap line.

Mildew smell that will not wash out

Usually: Standing water in the boot and the pump filter, detergent film on the drum, and the door kept closed between loads. Humid Cypress summers make it worse.

What we do: Washer cleaning is $175, or $250 with the dryer. We clean the boot, drum, dispenser and drain lines. If the boot is stained past cleaning, we can replace it for $50 to $100 in extra labor plus the part.

Top-loader won't spin or agitate

Usually: On the older Whirlpool and Maytag machines: a worn lid switch, a broken coupler or belt, or a failed transmission. On newer top-loaders: the lid lock or the shift actuator.

What we do: We test the switch, lock, coupler, belt or actuator and replace it. These are inexpensive parts we carry, so it is usually a one-visit repair.

A stacked washer and dryer in an upstairs closet is harder to work on, but we do it every week in Cypress. If you are replacing instead, washer and dryer installation is $175 to $225 for the pair, including water, drain and vent hookups. Hoses and cords are extra.
